Cambria County nurses see major improvement in shortage since pandemic peak

Four years ago, nurses and other medical professionals were working on the frontlines of the Coronavirus pandemic. This – taking a toll on many – resulting in extreme nurse shortages across the country. According to a report by the United States Chamber of Commerce there is still a present nursing shortage, but Cambria County nurses 6 News spoke with say it has improved immensely. “It was a huge strain," said Kris O'Shea, Chief Nursing Officer with Conemaugh Medical Center as she reflected on the Covid-19 pandemic.

Central PA puppy breeder shares experience on "Horrible Hundred" list

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Pa — A report from the Humane Society trying to educate people on where they get their puppies. It’s called the “Horrible Hundred” and it is working to shine a light on the conditions dogs are forced to live through. CBS 21 took a closer look at the report and the six Central PA kennels listed. The report names one-hundred “so-called” problematic breeders and sellers. It looks at State Kennel Inspection records, if a breeder has been fined, and consumer complaints.

Conemaugh Health System CEO announces retirement

JOHNSTOWN -- Conemaugh Health System announced Monday that chief executive officer Scott Becker is retiring effective Sept. 30. Becker, a 30-year healthcare veteran, has led Conemaugh through some of the most evolutionary times in healthcare. He helped the four-hospital system transition through a strategic partnership with Duke LifePoint Healthcare. Jefferson County wildfire 90% contained, fire official says

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — Three days after the start of a massive wildfire in Jefferson County, fire officials say the wildfire is now contained. It was only Wednesday when smoke and ash were billowing over one ridge that overlooks the Clarion River. Now a fire safety officer from the Allegheny National Forest tells 6 News that 90% of the fire's now contained. The wildfire ravaged an area of forest about 25 minutes north of Brookville.

Richland Lanes up for sale

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — Richland Lanes has been a staple in Johnstown for 58 years. But will it be around for 58 more? The future of the bowling alley is currently unknown. Owner Mike Misler is looking to sell the business, which is listed for $1,100,000. Misler says he has been trying to sell it for three years now and retire, but has just now started to heavily advertise.

Saint Joseph's Academy suspends football for 2018 season

BOALSBURG, Pa. - Saint Joseph's Catholic Academy in Boalsburg has suspended its football program for the 2018 season. Athletic Director Chad Walsh said the decision was made due to a lack of committed players for the upcoming season. “We have not finished a season with more than 18 healthy players over the past 5five seasons. This year, we are looking at fewer than 13 who have committed to playing," said Walsh.

Biden condemns antisemitism kindled by Gaza war, campus protests at Holocaust remembrance

WASHINGTON (TND) — After the Nazis slaughtered six million Jews during the Holocaust, much of the world vowed never again. President Biden on Tuesday used a Holocaust Remembrance Day event to address rising antisemitism in America. The president addressed a new wound for the Jewish people, Hama's Oct. 7 attack in Israel, the deadliest day for Jews since Nazi-controlled Germany. Biden said that on Oct. 7, Hamas “brought to life” that hatred with the killing of more than 1,200 Israelis, mostly civilians, and warned that, already, people are beginning to forget who was responsible.

Bishop McCort athletics, wrestling placed on probation following recruitment investigation

Bishop McCort’s wrestling program has been placed on probation for three years following an investigation into recruitment violations of PIAA by-laws, officials said. D6 Chairman Bill Marshall confirmed to 6 Sports that a verdict had been reached regarding Bishop McCort athletics. Head wrestling coach Bill Bassett is suspended a year and the wrestling team will be prohibited from competing in the postseason for 20-36 months, pending appeal. Bishop McCort athletics were placed on probation Oct.

Letter, powder sent to Manhattan DA investigating Trump

NEW YORK (AP) — A powdery substance was found Friday with a threatening letter in a mailroom at the offices of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, the latest security scare as the prosecutor weighs a potential historic indictment of former President Donald Trump, authorities said. New York City police and environmental protection officials isolated and removed the suspicious letter, and testing “determined there was no dangerous substance,” Bragg spokesperson Danielle Filson said.

New Sri Lankan restaurant opens in Bedford County

Bedford Co., PA (WJAC) — A unique restaurant is opening in Bedford County. Melanie's Cuisine, a Sri Lankan restaurant, held a ribbon-cutting in downtown Bedford Thursday morning. All of their dishes are made with Sri Lankan spices that the owners grow themselves. The owners say there are many types of restaurants with varying cuisines, and they are just adding something to the growing diversity of the borough. "We all in the restaurant business we are offering our best services to the community and with variety.
